Youth Education
Christian Education for Guilford Park youth includes regular study on Sunday mornings, youth fellowship on Sunday evenings, and on-going service to the church and community. Our youth are an integral part of the life of the congregation, and lead worship on occasion as well as being represented on the session. Kim Row at krow at guilfordpark dot org, can answer your questions or help you get involved with our youth programming.
Sunday School
Sunday School Classes for middle school and high school youth meet each Sunday morning at 10am downstairs in our Youth Lounge. The middle school students focus on how the Bible came to be and learning about the Books of the Old and New Testaments. High School students participate in a discussion based life application Bible study.
Youth Fellowship
Weekly gatherings downstairs in the youth lounge for all youth 6th through 12th grade take place on Sunday evenings throughout the school year. These meetings include time for fellowship, fun, service and special projects. Youth meet from 5 to 6 p.m. All youth enjoy an annual beach trip and ski trip as well as occasional music concerts and lock-ins.
Confirmation
Classes begin each new year for our ninth grade and older students. A curriculum of Presbyterian heritage and history along with doctrine, policy, and what it means to be a Christian today is taught weekly. A confirmation banquet is held each spring and Confirmands express a Faith Statement of how they find God in their lives.
Youth Mission
Guilford Park youth participate in mission projects throughout the year, from serving at congregational events to taking mission trips abroad. They serve meals at the Potters House and Hot Dish and Hope, collect donations for the Souper Bowl of Caring, and host the Angel Tree Party each Christmas. Both youth groups take an annual summer mission trip. In 2014 the middle school youth spent a week in Washington, DC, and the high school youth spent a week in Charleston, SC for their mission trips.
Retreats and Conferences
The highlight of each summer is the opportunity for youth to participate in national youth events to make new friends and grow in faith. Our senor highs attend the Montreat Youth Conference near Asheville, NC, and our middle schoolers attend the Massanetta youth conference in Harrisonburg, VA. Our youth also participate in our Presbytery Youth Conference retreats at Camp Hanes. Guilford Park also holds a Sexuality Retreat for both our middle and high school youth.
Special Events
Each year the middle school and high school youth groups lead our congregation in worship on Youth Sundays. Both groups sponsor fall projects for children – the middle school host a Pumpkin Party for children and the high school youth host a Christmas party for the Angel Tree recipients. Both groups participate in a Lenten project of their choosing for the community like an Animal Blessing or food drive.
