Car Parade Food Drive- From the Mission and Justice and Peacemaking Committees:
Thank you for your generosity in contributing to the food drop-off in December. It definitely made a difference. To respond to the ongoing need for food assistance, there will be another food drop-off at GPPC on January 24 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the paved lot. For this event, we are asking that you specifically bring items such as peanut butter, large containers of oatmeal, and tuna. For those uncomfortable with getting out right now, Amazon delivery orders and other food deliveries may be scheduled for delivery directly to the church between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. 2100 Fernwood Dr. We hope you can join us again to make a donation and see and greet our fellow GPPC members. Thank you.

Join us as we explore the Beatitudes through Companions in Christ – The Way of Blessedness.

What does it mean to be blessed? Jesus teaches us about blessedness through the eight Beatitudes offered at the beginning of his Sermon on the Mount. These teachings paint a portrait of the citizen of the Kingdom of God and direct us to attitudes of mind and habits of heart that result in our actual way of being in the world.
What: Companions in Christ is a small group experience in spiritual formation. Phyllis Setzer and Martha Higgins will be leading the 9 weekly sessions. The first week we will explore what it means to live a blessed life. Each following week focuses on one of the Beatitudes. There are short daily readings with questions and journaling prompts to guide reflections on the readings. Each week we will focus on one of the Beatitudes. The meetings are structured with four segments, opening and closing with short worship time, time to share our thoughts/insights about the week’s readings and a time for deeper exploration into the week’s theme. The time commitment is usually around 30 minutes daily with a 2 hours weekly meeting.
When: Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m., January 19 – March 16. The introductory meeting January 19 will be 6:30-7:30 p.m. and will review the book and rhythm of the class and practice Zoom technology.
Where: Zoom! A link will be sent to access the meetings.
Who: You do not need to have taken a previous Companions in Christ class. You will need access to a computer or tablet with webcam to participate. Using a smartphone limits your ability to see the group so it is not recommended for these meetings.
How to get a book: The church will have ten copies available.
How to sign up: Email Martha Higgins at

From Justice & Peacemaking
Dear GPPC,
On February 28 at 6:30 p.m., you are invited to join the Justice and Peacemaking Committee for a book discussion on Long Time Coming: Reckoning with Race in America by Michael Eric Dyson. The discussion will take place on Zoom. Diverse views are welcome as we seek to find ways to better love our neighbors as ourselves. The book offers a chance to reflect on the many ways in which Black American lives have been and continue to be regarded as worth less than others. It also offers a powerful message of hope based on the Christian principle of redemptive love. With the widely publicized deaths of 5 Black Americans as a starting point for a deeper discussion of the attitudes and perceptions that too often lead to suffering and death, we hope to gain a better understanding of the need to declare that “Black lives matter.” A Zoom invitation will be sent closer to the date of the meeting. For any questions, please call Keith Harrington at 336-541-2385.

UPPER ROOM DEVOTIONALS
If you normally pick up your Upper Room at church you may stop by the church after 1:00 p.m. any day and pick one up from the gold mailbox at the paved parking lot door. If you normally receive your Upper Room in the mail, we apologize for the delay in getting it out to you. They were late arriving at the church. It is on the way.

The 2021 Flower Calendar still has lots of open dates. If you would like to place the flowers on the Lord's Table in honor or memory of a loved one, please email Jane Sharpe at churchadmin at guilfordpark dot org. Remember that the first Sunday of each month is communion and there are no flowers on the Lord's Table. I will accept reservations for dates on a first-come, first-served basis. Be sure to include the name of your loved one, who they are from, and whether you are placing the flowers in honor or in memory. Until we return to in-person worship all flowers will be donated unless they are reused for more than one service. Thank you for adorning our sanctuary for our worship services.

Thank you to all of our YouTube subscribers. Please invite your friends and family to our channel and ask them to subscribe.

COVID-19 infections are at an all-time high in our community right now and hospitals are full of COVID-19 patients. With that information, I want to focus your attention on the COVID-19 vaccine which is currently being given to residents in our community. This vaccine is our only defense against the virus. I hope to answer your questions and address some of the concerns or misconceptions you may have about the vaccine.
The COVID-19 vaccine has been tested and determined to be safe and effective. More than 70,000 people volunteered in clinical trials for two vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) to help determine if they would be safe and effective to prevent COVID-19 illness. Volunteers included Black/African Americans, Hispanics/Latin Americans, Asians, Caucasians, and others. To date, the vaccines are 95% effective in preventing COVID-19 with no serious safety concerns noted in the clinical trials. The best way to fight COVID-19 is to take the vaccine which is aimed at helping to slow the spread and save lives.
So how does the COVID-19 vaccine work? The two vaccines currently being administered (Pfizer and Moderna) work in a similar way, to give your body instructions to make a specific kind of protein similar to COVID-19. This protein safely teaches or tricks your body to think the virus is attacking. Your body then strengthens itself to fight off the COVID-19 virus if it ever tries to attack you. You CANNOT get COVID-19 from either of these vaccines.
Who is currently eligible to receive the COVID-19 Vaccine? The vaccine is being given in phases because of the limited supply. Phase 1a has been in effect for several weeks in our area and is mainly for healthcare employees who work directly with people who have or may have COVID-19. Last week we moved into Phase 1b -Group 1 of the process.
Who is part of the vaccination Phase 1b?
• Group 1: Persons 75 years and older: All people age 75 and older will be eligible to be vaccinated first in this group. There is no requirement to have certain qualifying chronic conditions.
• Group 2: Health care workers with in-person patient contact and frontline essential workers 50 years or older. Patient-facing direct health care workers are those directly caring for or working directly in areas where in-person patient care occurs. Essential frontline workers are defined by the CDC as workers who are in sectors essential to the functioning of society and who are at substantially higher risk for exposure to COVID-19. There is no requirement to have certain qualifying chronic conditions.
 • Group 3: All other health care workers with in-person patient contact and frontline essential workers of any age. There is no requirement to have certain qualifying chronic conditions.
How will I know when it is my turn to get a vaccine? YourSpotYourShot.nc.gov is a website that is updated regularly with accurate information about who can currently get vaccinated. You can also talk with your health care provider who can advise you about when it is your turn to be vaccinated if you are not sure. How quickly North Carolina moves through each phase will depend on the available vaccine supply. Currently, supplies are limited.
Where will I go to get the vaccine? Right now, in Guilford County, both the Health Department and Cone Health have vaccine clinics for the public. You must make an appointment. The phone number to schedule an appointment at one of the four Health Department clinics is 336-641-7944, option 2. The Cone clinic is located at 801 Green Valley and you can register by calling 336-890-1188 or online at
www.conehealth.com/covid19vaccine.
A free COVID-19 vaccine will be available to all who want it, but supplies will be limited at first. Getting the vaccine is the only way to save lives and slow the spread of COVID-19. I hope you will seriously consider doing so when it is your turn. The following website: NC DHHS COVID-19: Vaccines is the best place for you to get more information about COVID-19 and the vaccine. You can also contact me, Susan Smith, or your health care provider if you have questions or concerns.
Please continue to stay within your immediate family bubble and practice the 3 Ws: wait 6 feet apart, wash your hands, and wear a mask. And please contact me if I can help you in any way.
Stay Safe, Susan Smith, GPPC Nurse
