Success 101 Mentoring at Grimsley High School
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
What is it? Success 101 is offered as a class throughout the day to selected students who failed two or more classes the previous year. There are between 60-80 students who take the class. On a regular day, students retake the failed class on the computer to earn the credit hours needed to graduate. Some students have up to six classes to retake, and thus will be in Success 101 for multiple years. The Mentor The role of the mentor is not to help with academics or tutor; it is simply to be an adult friend. Having an accountable adult who cares can mean the difference between dropping out and graduating and getting a decent job. What do you do? So what do you do for your time together (~45 minutes)? Play a game (Uno, cards, etc.), take a walk around the campus, share a treat, read a book, etc. The goal is to build trust at the beginning to have more conversation later. You can even work in pairs with another mentor/mentee. When? Any day of the week, Monday-Friday. You can even change the day if needed due to meetings/appointments, etc. It's also not a big deal to miss a week due to vacation, but please be as consistent as you can with coming each week. If you need to miss a week, please communicate with your student. Time? Success 101 is offered during each class period except 2nd. Class periods run 56 minutes, and you'll end up with ~45 minutes with your student. The sign up form has the specific periods you can sign up for. Please be as consistent as you can with the time period, since that is the period the student is actually in the Success 101 class. |
