MOVING FORWARD
The Plan Ahead Team reminds everyone that the new bivalent vaccine targeting Omicron BA4.6 and 5 is becoming available at Greensboro pharmacies and Cone. Anyone who has not had a booster in 2 months or an active COVID in 3 months should consider getting this vaccine.
The Plan Ahead Team has reviewed community data regarding Covid and its variants in our area weekly throughout the summer. For most of the summer Guilford County has been designated Yellow, or medium prevalence of Covid, yet, transmission rates have increased 20% over the past 2 weeks. As a reminder, the CDC guidelines state that if you have been exposed to someone with Covid, even if you are vaccinated and fully boosted, wear a mask for 10 days starting with the day of last contact and get tested 5 days after the exposure and anytime you begin experiencing symptoms. The Plan Ahead Team appreciates everyone's diligence in doing their part to keep themselves and everyone at GPPC healthy and safe.
FROM THE PLAN AHEAD TEAM
As many of you may know, we are experiencing an increase in COVID infections in our community. This increase has fortunately not resulted in the number of hospitalizations that we saw this winter (only about 10% of the winter peak).
With the advent of widespread home testing, data on the number of new infections and the number of people with COVID-like illnesses who test positive for the virus have become less reliable metrics.
We stopped mandating mask-wearing when Guilford County was labeled by the CDC as having low community level of disease activity. This was a composite of hospital beds occupied by patients with COVID, daily hospital admissions of COVID, and the total number of new cases in the county.
This week we were changed to medium community level of disease activity. It’s not clear how long this will last, probably a few weeks. We are in a different situation than the spring of 2020. We have reliable vaccines and antiviral pills that both significantly reduce the likelihood of hospitalization. We also have treatments that are fairly effective in those who are admitted.
Until the level of acute infections drops, I would encourage those attending church functions to wear a mask for themselves and the members of our church and visitors. I don’t think that we need to mandate mask-wearing as we did (yet). I think that we have been so fortunate to not have an outbreak in our congregation. I would ask that each person exercise their own judgment in this situation, both their own health risks and those of others.

Update from Plan Ahead Committee
Dear Members and Friends of Guilford Park Presbyterian Church,
As you may know, on March 27 GPPC adopted a new COVID-19 policy making masks optional. The Plan Ahead Committee makes recommendations based on current local statistics, NC mandates, and guidance from our local medical community. Every decision is carefully discussed and prayerfully considered. As we continue to worship under the mask-optional policy, we want to be considerate of members who have fragile immune systems and ensure that everyone who worships with us remains safe and healthy. Below is a set of guidelines we should all follow when entering the church for any reason:

As we continue to worship under the mask-optional policy, we want to be considerate of members who have fragile immune systems and ensure that everyone who worships with us remains safe and healthy. Below is a set of guidelines we should all follow when entering the church for any reason:
- It is of utmost importance that you remain at home and attend church virtually if you are experiencing fever, cold, flu, or COVID-19 symptoms.
- If you know that you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or feel you may have COVID-19 we recommend that you follow the current CDC guidelines that can be found at this website: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/your-health/quarantine-isolation.html
- It is always better to stay home and err on the side of caution if you are unsure of your COVID-19 status or have any concerns about the guidelines.
Dear members and friends of Guilford Park Presbyterian Church,
As you are certainly aware, many Covid restrictions are being lifted in our community, state, and nation. This includes mask requirements at many local churches, including Presbyterian Churches. At the most recent meeting of the Plan Ahead Team on Tuesday, March 15, a decision was made to present this recommendation to Session:
The Plan Ahead Team recommends to Session a mask-optional policy for church events and services beginning March 27, 2022. The Plan Ahead Team requests the right to revisit this recommendation should community metrics and data change and in the event of changes in local and/or state guidelines.
At our monthly Session meeting on Sunday, March 20, 2022, Session received and discussed this mask-optional policy recommendation from the Plan Ahead Team. After much discussion and consideration, Session voted unanimously to approve the recommendation. It is important to recognize that part of this recommendation is the right for Plan Ahead to revisit the mask optional policy if community metrics and data change in the weeks and months ahead. At this time, we believe it is safe for some members to attend events and services without masks, while fully supporting other members who choose to continue wearing masks. We also strongly encourage all members who are eligible to be vaccinated. If you are not feeling well, running a fever of 100 degrees or more, or experiencing any cold or Covid symptoms, please make the responsible decision to remain at home. If you have any questions, thoughts, or concerns about this decision, please contact me or any of our elders.
As mentioned in the recommendation, our mask-optional policy will begin this Sunday, March 27, 2022.
In Christ’s Service,

The Plan Ahead Team extends their gratitude to the membership of Guilford Park Presbyterian Church for their diligence, compassion, and acts of responsibility in doing their part to mitigate the spread of Covid at church events and activities. Moving forward the Plan Ahead Team supports committees and groups in planning activities and events for church members as long as these strategies to prevent the spreading of Covid are followed:
- Quality masks are required for indoor gatherings.
- Social distancing is observed.
- Each attendee accepts personal responsibility for doing their part to protect themselves and others from the spread of this illness.
- Churchwide serving of food or meals should continue to be avoided at present, however, small gatherings may choose to provide refreshments.
From the Plan Ahead Team
The vote from the County Commissioners on Monday evening lifting the indoor mask mandate is promising and gives us hope that as a community we are making progress in protecting our citizens from Covid. Even though the County has decided the metrics have met the criteria to lift the mandate, Guilford Park continues to think lovingly about our entire church family, young and old, healthy and health compromised, vaccinated and unvaccinated. We want everyone to worship and to safely participate in activities, meetings, and events at GPPC without fear of getting sick or of spreading illness. For these reasons everyone attending worship or activities indoors at the church is asked to continue to wear masks. This act of compassion and consideration for all is greatly appreciated.

With the concerning increases in positivity rates, hospitalizations, and cases of Covid, many churches and businesses are returning to more restrictive practices. At Guilford Park, we are fortunate that we adopted a slow and steady return to activities. By continuing to follow the guidelines established, we are able to keep meeting for Sunday services and some programs and meetings. While we are beginning 2 Sunday morning services, we need to be mindful that masks covering the nose and the mouth are required when inside the building and that only the Fellowship Hall and the Westminster Room may be reserved for use. Other areas of the church are not available due to the need for space to social distance. Just like Sunday morning services, any other activities in the church are expected to honor the 3 feet space between individuals or family groups when meeting indoors. The park is also available, without masks, and hopefully, Mother Nature will be kinder to our weather in the coming weeks and groups can be comfortable meeting outdoors. The Plan Ahead Team extends their thanks and appreciation to the church family for honoring these safety guidelines.
Moving Forward
Did you notice that the Plan Ahead Team's new headline is "Moving Forward?" This title represents the action that we hope we are taking as the team continues to make decisions about the resumption of activities at Guilford Park. When looking for word from the Plan Ahead Team, look for "Moving Forward."
In another step to moving forward, beginning Sunday, August 8, you will no longer be greeted by members of the Plan Ahead Team checking off your family's names on a roster. Instead, the friendship pads will return. Once again, we will sign the friendship pads and pass them to others on our pew for them to sign in. We look forward to seeing you Sunday!

The Plan Ahead Team is grateful to everyone attending services and meetings at the church for their faithful and thoughtful wearing of masks. It's a wonderful thing to know that everyone can safely worship together no matter their vaccination status. Those taking attendance and ushering are delighting in the variety of masks that greet us each Sunday. We might have to start a mask fashion show! Thank you to everyone for your faithful attendance and for wearing masks.
The Plan Ahead Team continues to meet regularly and monitor local data. The team is excited to be worshiping indoors and is grateful to all staff, members, and guests who make the Sunday services special. Thank you for respecting and following the safety protocols that the team established for the health of our children and members with health concerns. Thank you, also, for visiting with friends before or after the service outside on the sidewalks rather than indoors. Keep an eye open for more updates later this month.
Looking Ahead from Plan Ahead
Thank you, every member, every staff member, visitors, and all who worked to make Sunday's service happen indoors! It was such a blessing to be indoors together, hearing the organ live, enjoying Jordan's music and offertory live, to stand together for hymns, to sing even with our masks on, to pass the peace with eye contact and verbal greetings, and to simply be in the presence of our church family and fellow worshipers. We have been fortunate that the staff provided quality worship services during the past 15 months without fail, but there's no replacement for physically being together. Thank you to all for respecting the protocols that are in place to make sure that our worship experiences are safe for everyone. As a reminder:

- Everyone is asked to wear a mask, even those who are fully vaccinated.
- Enter and exit the sanctuary using the wooden double doors or the glass doors on the Fairfield side or the door into the gathering place through the columbarium on the Fernwood side.
- Follow seating plans, sitting on every other pew and keeping social distance of 3-6 feet between groups or individuals on each pew.
- Only the sanctuary is open. Please do not visit other areas of the building before, during, or after the service.
- There is no in-person Sunday School for adults or children.
- Children will worship with their families in the sanctuary. There will not be a nursery nor a separate children's church.
- The service will continue to be live-streamed at 9:30 Sunday mornings for those who are unable to attend or who are safer worshiping virtually.
After nearly 15 months of worshiping virtually or more recently outdoors in the park, the sanctuary doors of Guilford Park will open to in-person worship at 9:30 on June 20. The Plan Ahead Team is grateful to Session's vote to allow a return to in-person worship, and to all GPPC members who have done what is necessary to keep our community safe from Covid-19 and our worship and the celebration of our faith thriving. As the doors open on Sunday, please continue to be diligent in the safe-keeping of our Christian family. With love we care for all who enter the doors. Be mindful of the following policies as we move indoors:
- Everyone is asked to wear a mask, even those who are fully vaccinated.

LOOKING AHEAD AND MOVING FORWARD

Moving forward the Plan Ahead Team supports the following updates to the use of church facilities:
- Groups, committees, circles, or any other church gatherings may use the inside rooms of the church.
- The kitchen and water fountains are not available, but restrooms are.
- The Fellowship Hall, the Westminster Room, the Library, or other rooms may be used for meetings or gatherings as long as all members keep a social distance of 3-6 ft apart (keep in mind the number who will attend and the space of the room), wear masks, keep doors and windows open where possible, keep a roster of attendance, and keep the event's length to 1 hour or less.
- The church building is not available until after 1 p.m. on days that the preschool is in session.
- Reserve indoor spaces as well as the Park through the church office at 336-288-5452 or churchadmin at guilfordpark dot org.
With the recent lifting of mask and social distancing mandates by the Governor and the Mayor, your Plan Ahead Team has updated expectations and policies for worship.
Sunday morning Worship services will continue to be held in the Park unless weather conditions force the service to be live-streamed. When coming to the Park for worship, please bring your mask along with your chair. Fully vaccinated worshipers may choose not to wear their masks, but those with health concerns, those who are unvaccinated, and those feeling more comfortable with a mask need to wear masks during the service. To express our love, compassion, and acceptance of all, the Plan Ahead Team asks that when you are greeting or visiting someone who is wearing a mask you also wear your mask.
The Plan Ahead Team continues to discuss and discern the timing and plan to move worship back into our sanctuary, but we will do so thoughtfully and carefully. As Dr. Bill Hickling said, “No one has gotten sick (Covid) from attending GPPC yet, and we want to keep it that way!”

Guilford Park has been looking ahead for a very long year and we are hopeful that what lies ahead is what we've been waiting for! Sunday's service in the park was wonderful and we thank every member who attended, whether in person or virtually. Thank you for honoring safety protocols and for joyously participating in the Sunday morning service. The Plan Ahead Team extends a special word of appreciation and gratitude for our outstanding staff and their planning and delivery of the service, and to all the volunteers who helped set up and take down all the equipment and materials. A special thank you goes to the Worship Committee for providing ushers, volunteers, flowers, and the communion elements. We are now looking forward to Sunday in the Park every Sunday for the foreseeable future.
Another step forward is members' use of their PIN to access the front door of the church. We are pleased to be able to welcome you back into the building and appreciate your patience and cooperation over the past year to keep our church staff and Preschoolers safe. It is advisable to call the church office before you come to the building to make sure there will not be too many people here at one time. Please enter only at the office door and not through the Preschool door. You may come Monday through Thursday after 1:00 p.m., singly or in small family units or groups. This will enable you to check your box in the church office, update bulletin boards, visit the Library, etc. Bathrooms and kitchen will still be off-limits, so plan your visit accordingly. Please continue to wear your mask in the building and practice appropriate social distancing within your group and with the church staff.

Stable metrics, vaccinations, and people doing safe things like wearing masks and social distancing are leading us to more opportunities to be together. In addition to the PW Circles, committees and church groups who are interested in meeting together may schedule use of the Fellowship Hall by reserving the space with the church administrator. The following procedures need to be followed for groups to use the space:

From the Plan Ahead Team
It's been a long year, but there seems to be a light glowing towards the end of this tunnel. We're not there, yet, but Sunday's Easter service was proof that we are nearing the time when we will safely return to in-person worship. The Plan Ahead Team thanks each staff member for their tireless efforts making the Easter service in the park a welcome and memorable event. We also thank every member who attended, all 109 of you, for your commitment to gathering safely. We thank ALL members for their patience and for their dedication to Guilford Park. Not only did Sunday's Easter service provide us the much-needed opportunity to worship together and celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, but it also provided staff and members a chance to practice the best way to hold outdoor services. With Session's approval, we are looking forward to beginning regular outdoor services at 9:30 a.m. on May 2, and continuing weekly for the foreseeable future. Both video and outdoor services will be provided. Details soon to follow about both services. We offer our deep appreciation to our staff, committees, and members who lovingly accept responsibility to keep us all safe and to give us the opportunity to begin gathering together in person again. See you in the Park in May!

It's a season full of hope and promise. The weather is promising beauty in the spring flowers. The Covid vaccine is offering hope for safety from sickness or worse. And Easter promises hope for faith members. We are grateful to the dedicated staff of GPPC who are preparing for our Easter worship and celebrations as they plan the Palm Sunday car parade, the Maundy Thursday recorded service, the Easter recorded service, and the Easter morning outdoor service. What a lot to be thankful for! As data for Guilford County and North Carolina improves, the Plan Ahead Team encourages everyone to remain vigilant and patient in wearing masks, washing hands, and keeping a safe distance between yourself and others. These are habits we've learned over the past year, and ones that will continue to keep us safe and healthy. We look forward to seeing our church family outdoors, via zoom, and in all the other creative ways we've learned and will be exploring.

The Plan Ahead Team met February 9 and reviewed current data and metrics provided by Dr. Bill Hickling and our congregational nurse, Susan Smith. The team also reviewed a letter recently received from the Salem Presbytery. The following is an excerpt from that letter:
"On Thursday afternoon, January 21, your presbytery COVID-19 task force met again to consider how our situation has changed (or not) since our last correspondence recommending that our church buildings remain closed until at least February 1. This time we included Ruling Elder Beth Hooten from First Presbyterian Church Burlington, who holds a doctorate in public health and serves on the COVID-19 Re-Entry Task Force for her congregation. Given the state of viral burden in North Carolina, we continue to recommend our church facilities in Salem Presbytery remain closed to in-person indoor gathering until at least May 1, 2021."
With guidance from our experts, The Plan Ahead Team agrees with the Salem Presbytery’s recommendation to remain closed to in-person worship services until May 1. No changes were made to current policies in place for use of the fellowship hall and park by small groups. We are disappointed for the delay to in-person worship services, but recognize the need to make this hard decision. We continue to celebrate the Sunday services provided for us by our talented staff and the drive-through parades and celebrations. We thank the Guilford Park family for your patience and thoughtfulness as we all work through living with the pandemic.

Looking Ahead But Staying Safe
In the first meeting of 2021, the Plan Ahead Team reviewed local metrics and data with detailed guidance from Dr. Bill Hickling and reached a consensus that opening Guilford Park to in-person worship should not be rushed. The team is not looking at a specific date to return to worship services in the sanctuary but will continue to monitor community data. In the meantime, there is good news. The kids' movie night will continue in January; circles may continue to meet under the established protocols already in place; Bill Allred will resume section leader rehearsals; the Preschool opened January 4; the Elders Ordination took place in a carefully planned ceremony. The staff will plan future events in the coming days that will honor our need to fellowship with each other and respect the demand that we all act responsibly with the alarming covid numbers in our community. Through the fall and holiday season, our members have demonstrated that we have adjusted to this current "normal" and for this, the Plan Ahead Team is very grateful. May 2021 be healthy and safe for all in our church family.

GPPC Church members, people over age 75 can begin receiving the COVID-19 vaccine next week. I strongly encourage you to do this for your own health and the health of all those you love. This is the only weapon we have in the war on this deadly virus. It has been tested and proven to be safe and highly effective. It is not a live virus vaccine so people with immune deficiencies can be vaccinated. If you have concerns please contact me or discuss the vaccine with your doctor. Just follow the instructions below.

Planning Ahead
In November, members received a letter and a COVID Promise. This promise is a symbol that expresses our love and concern for each other. It shows our compassion and allows us to enter into a covenant with each other. There has been a good return of promises - 31% of those mailed have been signed and returned. Thank you for caring about yourself and for caring about your church family.
The Plan Ahead Team thanks the Membership Committee for the Music in the Park event they hosted on Saturday, December 12. What a fun, festive, safe event! Thank you to everyone who attended and for the cheerful compliance with the safe practices in place. The Plan Ahead Team also thanks the organizers for the car parade on Sunday. What a creative way to get families involved with the Christmas story! Thanks to the Fellowship Committee for the delicious cookies, for those selling the honor cards, those collecting food for GUM, for the continuation of the Angel Tree gifts, for all the others collecting COVID Promises, Pennies for Hunger, and anything else that members needed to bring to the church. It gave everyone a chance to see church family they hadn't seen in a while and a time to celebrate advent. Many thanks for the leadership and the creativity that is providing these opportunities for us during these different days.

Covid Pledge and Updates from The Plan Ahead Team
Have you received your family's Church Covid Pledge in the mail? The USPS does a great job, but even they get behind during the holidays. If you have not received a letter from the church with the Covid Pledge enclosed, please let Jane know and she'll get another to you right away. As of November 30, 18% of the pledges that were mailed had been signed and returned to the church. Thank you! If you have not yet returned your pledge, mark your calendar to bring it with you to the car parade on December 13 where Judy Herron Lasley will merrily collect it. You can also leave it in the gold box at the paved parking lot door of the church at any time. Prefer to sign it electronically? Contact Jane Sharpe at churchadmin at guilfordpark dot org or 336-288-5452 and she will get it to you.
Our Covid pledge is one that we make as individuals, committing to safe practices so that when we return to in-person events it will be safe and healthy for everyone.
The Salem Presbytery created a Covid Task Force that looked at our communities and considered both the theology and the science behind decisions on when to reopen churches to in-person services. It is their recommendation that churches in the Salem Presbytery continue virtual services through the month of January. Guilford Park has talented leadership that has faithfully provided wonderful weekly worship services. They will continue to bless us virtually through this holiday season. As we look forward to the day that increasing Covid numbers is not the headline, let us prepare by keeping ourselves healthy, protecting our family and friends (the 3 Ws), taking advantage of outdoor events, and signing the church's Covid Pledge.

The Plan Ahead Team was looking forward to announcing a return to in-person worship services, but the data in Guilford County does not support a return at this time. National and local health experts are cautioning that the holiday season has the potential to increase the spread of Covid-19, and we do not want any events, services, or activities at Guilford Park to be responsible for even one case. The team's decision is to monitor trends throughout the holidays and revisit a date of return in January. Our talented staff and members continue to provide excellent virtual services weekly, and other committees are planning events that will give us opportunities to join in celebrating the Christmas Season. We look forward to beginning Advent with a car parade on November 22 where members can receive soup and pick up an angel for the Angel Tree. The Membership Committee is planning a caroling event in the park December 12, and there will be another car parade December 13 to showcase the children's pageant. The Worship Committee is making plans for a Christmas Eve Service in the park. Details for all these events will be shared in the coming days.
As we slowly and surely make our safe way back to church, the Plan Ahead Team is asking every church member to sign a pledge of commitment to safe practices for events. Soon you will receive a letter and the pledge for your household. Please take time to read it carefully and agree to the safe habits listed. Signed pledges can be returned to the church at any of the events listed above, by mailing, by dropping off in the gold box at the church, or by calling Jane Sharpe to sign electronically.
We wish everyone a safe, joyous, and healthy holiday season!

Contact Budget
As we move into the fall/winter season, we are all learning how to navigate and balance our contacts and risk. One concept that I have found helpful is to think of my exposure/risk using a contact budget. This concept was proposed by Ellie Murray, a professor of Epidemiology at Boston University School of Public Health (@EpiEllie). A contact budget looks at your overall risk by factoring in all of your daily interactions. Just as you budget your finances, you can think of your contacts/risk exposure in a similar way.
To begin to think about your contact budget, consider the following:
As always, follow the 3 W’s – Wear a mask, Wait 6 feet apart, Wash your hands.

- Which contacts must I have?
- Work, school, caregiving, transportation, essentials (grocery/pharmacy)
- Which contacts do I want?
- Meeting with family, friends, hobbies, sports activities, etc
- How risky are those contacts?
- People – who will be there?
- Time – how long will it last?
- Space – how close together?
- Place – indoors or outside?
As always, follow the 3 W’s – Wear a mask, Wait 6 feet apart, Wash your hands.

Have you checked out the church's webpage (guilfordpark.org) recently? There's a tab just for COVID-19 Updates where you can find all the recent eNews posts from the Plan Ahead Team and other groups. Slowly, church gatherings are being planned and held. We are grateful for the PW Circles that are meeting again; for the monthly car parades; for Trunks O' Treats; for children and youth activities; for the October gatherings in the park; for handbells ringing again. The Plan Ahead Team is paying careful attention to metrics in Guilford County. Even though they do not look good this week, we are hopeful that all citizens will take responsibility and do their part to reduce the spread of the virus and bring the metrics down so that activities can safely resume. Rest assured the Plan Ahead Team IS planning ahead!
The Plan Ahead Team is working with Presbyterian Women and a few other small groups to begin GPPC's own dimmer-switch approach to opening the church to future in-person services. The team monitors Guilford County's health data and uses that as the guide to know the best time to resume services at the church. We continue to be grateful for the excellent virtual services offered each Sunday. We also express our appreciation to the Fellowship Committee for making arrangements for dates to gather in the park. The dimmer-switch is beginning to move, a little at a time. The Plan Ahead Team is grateful for everyone's patience and cooperation. Submitted by Rita Jennings

“We’re getting closer but still not ready to open at Guilford Park.” This is a quote from Dr. Bill Hickling as he follows carefully the COVID data in NC and Guilford County. “There are important encouraging trends but we’re not yet where we need to be.” We are all anxious to open and be together again and your Plan Ahead team is prepared for that day to be as safe as possible. You have already read that soon each church family will receive in the mail a pledge to sign committing to following safety measures. Watch for it in your mail and return it to the church by mail or bring it when we see you at church for the first time! Submitted by Judy Herron Lasley

The September PW Board meeting was held in the Church park. Our beloved annual fall retreat in Montreat is canceled this year, but Rebecca Conway worked with the owner of the house and he has agreed to apply our deposit towards next year. The “Thank Offering,” which helps International Missions, is underway. Circle Chairs have envelopes for circle members which can be mailed to the Church, placed in the Church’s locked mailbox, or Circle Chairs can return them to the November PW meeting. Checks should be made out to GPPC with “Thank Offering” designated on the check. Contact Mary Bruce if more envelopes are needed. Sally Beck is working on the annual PW Yearbook, and Emmy Biaggi, Mission Chair, is planning our Community Christmas Project. Submitted by Kay Cheshire
Congregational Care
Congregation Care continues to reach out to our congregation, particularly those who live alone, have health issues, or who have limited contact with others. Our goal is to keep our church community as vibrant as possible in this time of physical separation. Though we haven’t met as a committee by ZOOM, we are in touch with each other through emails and phone calls. Submitted by Levina Kollar

Plan Ahead Team
As we slowly start the process of resuming in-person meetings, events, and services, there will be many steps taken to make sure everyone is safe and healthy. As mentioned last week, when groups meet in the park, reservations need to be made through Jane. She will make sure you get all the information you need to follow the protocols established by the Plan Ahead Team. One thing each group is asked to do is to list the names of those attending the event. The list follows this statement: “By having your name on this roster for Guilford Park Presbyterian Church meetings and events you are agreeing that you have not been exposed to anyone with Covid-19 or symptoms of Covid-19; that you are feeling well today and do not have a cough, shortness of breath, fever or chills, muscle or body aches, vomiting or diarrhea, or new loss of taste or smell; and that you will properly wear a cloth face covering and maintain 6 feet distance between yourself and others while at this event on GPPC property.”
Soon each member of the church will receive a personal pledge that will need to be signed and returned. This pledge is similar to the group pledge but requires the commitment of each individual. Be on the lookout for more information about this personal pledge coming soon to the eNews and your mailbox!
Fellowship Committee
Someone suggested to Fellowship that we consider a church-wide family retreat weekend. After so many months of not seeing people, this sounds like a little glimpse of heaven. The committee has talked about places where we might hold such an event when it is safe to do so – such as Fort Caswell on Oak Island or Caraway Conference Center & Camps near Asheboro. Let us know if you have other thoughts about locations for a weekend retreat. Submitted by Jan Heywood

Plan Ahead Team
The Plan Ahead Team, in accordance with the Governor’s dimmer-switch approach to resuming activities, has outlined guidelines for groups who want or need to meet. Currently, these gatherings are limited to the church’s Park and are by reservation only. Jane Sharpe has the specific details for gatherings and will make sure your group knows them when she is contacted for reservations to use the space.
When groups get together, it is also important that each group commit to a COVID Agreement and Roster. This agreement is a statement that the participants understand their role in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and that they feel well at the time of the meeting. One person, either the group leader or a designee from the event will list all the attendees’ names. The list is to be returned to the church office at the conclusion of the meeting. Having one person list the names will limit contact with a pen by multiple people and will give an accounting of who was in attendance in case they need to be notified of any exposure. There will also be a sign at the park reminding people to check themselves for symptoms. Remember, masks and social distancing are required.
Coughing? Tummy trouble? Feverish? Sore throat? Headache or body aches? Just not feeling well? Please take care of yourself and others by staying home. We look forward to many future events and don’t want anyone’s health to be jeopardized by rushing too quickly to meet with others.
Children & Youth Committee
This Saturday, September 12 we will be doing popsicles in the park for our Church youth from 1 p.m. -3 p.m. Also, just a reminder we are doing a drive-through this Sunday, September 13 in the church parking lot with S'mores from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. We can't wait to see you all there! There will be no Sunday School this Sunday due to the drive-through.
Also, please join us on Zoom for Sunday School on Sundays at 10:30 a.m.
Membership Committee
Membership Committee has tentatively scheduled a Christmas Carol Sing for December 12, at 5:00 p.m. Our hope and prayer are that in 3 more months COVID-19’s impact might have lessened so that this outdoor gathering will comply with our Plan Ahead Team’s recommendations. Last year participation was good from both our congregation and invited neighbors. We’d love for it to become a cherished annual event. So, mark your calendars in pencil for a Carol Sing on December 12 at 5:00 p.m. We’ll keep you posted.

Adult Education Committee
The Adult Education Committee, in an effort to continue Bible Study opportunities remotely, is seeking a volunteer to lead Adult Sunday School, via ZOOM, using the Faithful Christian curriculum. Please contact Donna Schumacher at 336-265-8232 if you are interested, able, and willing to lead a class.
Worship Committee
The Worship Committee joins the congregation in appreciation for the Sunday worship services published each week on YouTube and our GPPC website. We average around 135 members and visitors tuning into our weekly worship services, alternating between Traditional and Casual styles. Please invite other listeners to hear David Cagle's challenging messages. Save the Date: Lay Sunday is scheduled for October 11. Korey Hickling has agreed to bring the lay message for us. Rick Cromer reports the Sanctuary camera is in house and will be tested over the next several weeks before we can train operators and begin live-streaming worship. Don’t forget to send us your “hands” for our liturgical display in the sanctuary.

From the Plan Ahead Team
Recently Governor Cooper compared the reopening of businesses and other affected closures to turning up a dimmer switch. The Plan Ahead Team has decided to try this same approach to returning to worship and events at GPPC. In making this decision the team is carefully watching the data for Guilford County regarding the rate of new infections and the percentage of positive test results. Thanks to Judy Campbell and Kim Row, the church's park has been marked off in 6 ft. circles so that small groups can gather and maintain social distancing. At this time the use of this space will be available to children and youth events that Kim is planning and to PW Circles who are interested in meeting. There are certain requirements necessary in order to use this space safely. Any use of the park needs to be scheduled with Jane Sharpe in the church office. Events are limited to 1 hour in duration and no more than 25 people. Masks are required. A list of questions will be posted at the event and if anyone answers yes to any of the questions then they are asked to leave the event. Users need to bring their own chairs. Congregating before or after the event is strongly discouraged. The expectation is that attendees will arrive no more than 15 minutes before the event and will be gone within 15 minutes of the event's end.
The Plan Ahead Team expresses its deep appreciation to Bill Hickling and the church's nurse, Susan Smith, for their guidance in understanding the data and establishing guidelines for gathering. Hope to see you in the park soon! Submitted by Rita Jennings

The PW Board held a Zoom meeting in June. Kay Cheshire will remain as Moderator this year, Ashlyn McClellan is Moderator-Elect, and Emmi Biaggi is Mission Chair. The rest of the PW Board members have graciously agreed to serve again in their same roles as last year. With the help of the “Plan Ahead Team,” PW has received permission for our Circles to meet in the park across from the Church. The limit is 25 people and I assured the team that none of our Circles have that many members. The Rules below must be followed, or PW will lose this privilege.

We have focused on those who live alone and those in retirement and care environments whose activities and visitors have been especially restricted. Circle members and others in the congregation also have reached out in similar ways. Submitted by Levina Kollar

WOMEN’S CIRCLES IN THE PARK
- You need to set up a day and time with Jane. We are asking groups to limit their time to one hour with a 15-minute window to arrive and depart.
- Bring chairs if possible; one chair per blue painted circle. There are a few “seats” using picnic tables and benches. Seating “spots” are marked in blue paint by a dot on the ground.
- Bring your own everything! We may not share papers, books, drinks, food.
- Masks and social distancing are required here too…no hugs or handshakes or congregating in the parking lot.
- There will be the usual “How are you feeling” questions posted to read, but we remind everyone if they are not feeling well --- STAY HOME!!!

The Fellowship Committee met via Zoom on July 27. The Pig Pickin’ is canceled for 2020. This is sad, but we don’t see a good and safe way to plan an event this large for the fall. We discussed designating times for small gatherings in the GPPC park under the big tree once the weather is cooler and the NC COVID-19 situation permits it. There will likely be some means of signing up beforehand for a given date/time so we can control the crowd size. Submitted by Jan Heywood

Just a reminder we are doing a Drive through Sunday School Kick-Off in the church parking lot with the Blessing of the Bookbags/laptops this Sunday (8/16/20) from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. We can't wait to see you all there! There will be no Sunday School this Sunday (08/16/20) due to the drive-through.
Also, please join us for Sunday School on Sundays at 10:30 am. Submitted by Laura Harrington, C&Y vice-chair
Worship Committee joins you each week on Sunday mornings at home attending virtual worship services. Please be faithful in attending worship, and giving feedback (virtual handshakes) to David, Kim, Brian, Bill, or other members who inspire you with their message, song, and presence. Session has approved new video and audio equipment that will enable us to live stream worship in early September. Submitted by George Setzer (Worship Chair)
The Preschool Committee has made the very hard decision to pause our reopening of the preschool until January 2021. This is not a decision that has been arrived at lightly. There are many factors that informed our decision. Our primary focus has been and is—the safety and well-being of our staff and families. Our hopes are that by January we will have more information and improved data to help us in our plans to open a safe environment. We have appreciated the support, input, and guidance of the church during this unprecedented time.

Greetings from your Plan Ahead Team.
We want to keep you apprised of our activities. Some of you may have seen the Minute for Mission in last Sunday’s service. Before we can confidently open our sanctuary for worship the prevalence of COVID-19 in Guilford County and North Carolina has got to decline. As a county and state, we are not in exponential spread of the virus and our hospitals have capacity to care for all who need hospitalization.
But we are not seeing the declines that would make COVID a rare condition and would allow us to confidently believe that worship together with social distancing and masks would be safe. For this to happen, as a community and a country we have to consistently “follow the 3 W’s” recommended by the CDC.
Wear a cotton mask when you anticipate going into public in close proximity others. Wash your hands for 20 seconds with soapy water whenever you have touched surfaces that are not in your home. When in line with others wait a distance of 6 feet apart from people who are not living in your home.
If we could all agree to consistently do these three things, the transmission of the virus would precipitously drop, and with it, new cases and deaths. Preventing the spread of this virus is the key to bringing it under control which has been seen in 5 states in the Northeast and many other countries. We can learn to live with this virus and begin a more normal social existence, like attending church in person on Sundays.
At today’s Plan Ahead Meeting we discussed the GPPC preschool. We will meet with Director Debbie Huneycutt next week to learn about their activities to plan for opening later this year. It won’t take place if we can’t meet the CDC guidelines for safely reopening the preschool.
Peace to you,
Bill Hickling

New habits are being formed as everyone adjusts to an ever-changing way of daily life. Some of these new habits may include when and where shopping takes place, working from home, going out to dinner, altered vacation plans, visiting friends and family, attending church services online, and of course wearing masks! As new habits are formed, let's be aware of friends and acquaintances that were part of our old habits and not leave them behind as we figure out how to take care of ourselves during the pandemic. Make friends with the church directory and try to reach out to someone that you've not heard from in a long time. As we look ahead, let's be sure to take others with us.
In humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.
Philippians 2:3 (NIV)

Looking Ahead
From The Plan Ahead Team
Two months ago, it seemed we were all biding our time until this novel coronavirus was wrangled under control and things returned to normal. In the month of May, The Plan Ahead Team began looking at procedures, protocols, and timelines for returning to in-person worship. Members of the team, Kim Row, Bill Allred, Susan Smith, Kenny Thompson, Becca Gordon, Bill Hickling, Ed Cheshire, Martha Higgins, Judy Herron Lasley, Judy Campbell, Rita Jennings, Kit Schooley, and newly added David Cagle, began regular meetings.
As the weeks and months passed, much changed and developed. First of all, we know now that this virus isn’t going to go away anytime soon. As of this writing on July 14, 2020, the Governor extended Phase 2 of the re-opening for another 3 weeks. With an abundance of caution, guidance from the Governor’s office, and the information and interpretation of data from Bill Hickling, the team continues to meet and plan for the time that GPPC returns to in-person worship. Three subcommittees of the team are looking at how to prepare the facility, how to utilize medical information and protocols in the church, and how and what to communicate to members.
Using numbers and data available on July 14, the Plan Ahead Team decided to use the following criteria, in addition to the Governor’s orders regarding gatherings of groups and CDC guidelines, to guide decisions about worship in our building.

- For indoor meetings the curve of new cases in North Carolina needs to decline steadily and become flattened like the curves in New York and New Jersey (see https://www.covidtracker.com/). From March to July North Carolina’s curve was an upward slope that may have flattened this week, but has not dropped for more than a few days at a time since March.
- The percentage of positive tests out of all tests in NC is currently 7.7%. The goal for return to indoor activities is when the percentage of positive tests is reduced to 2% of all tests in the Triad Region.
PLAN AHEAD TEAM REPORTS

Worshiping In-Person
Returning to our sanctuary will be a sign to us that our long struggle with COVID-19 has entered a new stage. We will be together with our Transition Pastor, Dr. David Cagle, and begin to make our personal connections with him. It will not be a time like we have known in the past, however. As you know we will wear masks and will worship from specific locations in the pews. We will hold one service of worship each Sunday.
At the outset, we will worship mostly with the written and spoken word but no congregational singing. Hymns are an important part of corporate worship, however, so we will incorporate them in new and creative ways, including responsive readings of one verse, verses played or sung as we read silently, or meditation during a special instrumental arrangement. Yes, we will have our organ and our piano, occasional string and wind instruments, along with vocal solos. Choirs and congregational singing, for the time being, must be suspended. We will empty the pews of hymnals and other papers, but we will put bulletins on every seat. Families and couples will sit with one another but six feet from other worshipers.
Communion with one another will have to await safer times, as will passing the peace and socializing before and after worship. All these new ways to worship God together are a result of the Plan Ahead Team’s responsibility to keep us safe.
We expect attendance at these initial services of worship will be smaller than we are used to, as members who are over age 65, or those whose health makes them especially vulnerable to COVID-19 may choose to stay at home for a while. We will continue to provide online access to worship, and our worship leaders, Kim Row for children, Bill Allred, Brian Fitts, and Jordan Hart for music will return with us.
When will this altered worship begin? When your leaders can assure you that it is safe to worship together and no one will become sick because of in-person worship with God. We look forward to the day.

Dear friends,
Below is policy recommended by the Transition Team and approved by the session.
Given that:
Session of Guilford Park Presbyterian Church Transition Team
March 18, 2020
Church activities and COVID-19 (Coronavirus)
• On March 15th, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) advised that no large group events of more than 50 people take place for eight weeks.
• On March 16th, the White House, with CDC approval, advised that no group events of more than 10 people of any kind take place for the next 15 days.
• On March 17th, the Governor of North Carolina ordered all bars and restaurants closed.
• Yesterday, the Presbyterian Board of Pensions sent all workers home, no meetings or
other in-person activities for eight weeks.
• The virus is documented to have a much higher death rate for people over 60 years of age
than for those younger.
• A large percentage of our members are over 60 years of age, making our membership
more at-risk than the general population.
We recommend that session immediately approve and authorize the following:
1. All church activities are suspended, no in-person meetings or activities of any kind. This includes worship events, committee meetings, session meetings, small group meetings, circles, choir rehearsals, book studies, and other activities of the church, whether held on church property or not.
2. Church groups are encouraged to interact using technology: email, conference calling. etc. (Free conference calling is available from sources such as freeconferencecall.com.)
3. Graveside or columbarium services may be held with only family members attending and maintaining personal separation between attendees. Memorial services will be held at a later time.
4. Pastoral care will be provided via phone calls, written notes, or other means that do not involve physical contact.
5. All church staff are directed to work from home with the assignment to plan for future programs after this secession of activities is lifted.
6. Session needs to consider how to support the job responsibilities of Church Administrator Jane Sharpe in this period, how she can be supported completing these responsibilities remotely, and how, if some time in the office is needed, she is provided with both a safe workplace and protection from virus risks. Session needs to be aware of the risk of inadvertently increasing her workload beyond appropriate limits.
7. All staff will be paid during this secession of activities.
8. This secession of activities takes effect immediately and continues until further notice.
Respectfully submitted,
Guilford Park Presbyterian Church Transition Team
